Apple crumb pie

Servings 8

Ingredients
  

Topping

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (one stick) butter, cold and cubed or grated

Filling

  • 9 MacIntosh apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

Instructions
 

Preheat oven to 450º.

    Topping

    • Combine topping ingredients. Use a fork or yourhands to quickly mix in the butter until it is the consistency of small peas.
    • Set aside.

    Filling

    • Mix the apples, flour, and spices. Heap into a pie plate containing the bottom crust.
    • Pile the crumb topping on. You might have to use your hands to keep it on the pie.

    Bake

    • Bake at 450º for 15 min.
    • Reduce heat to 350º.
    • Cut a piece of aluminum foil slighlty larger than the pie. Loosely tent the pie with the foil.
    • Bake 50 minutes or until the apples are soft. Test by how easily a butter knife goes through the apples.

    Notes

    Place a cookie sheet on the shelf below the pie to catch drips and save on clean-up time.
